The Power of Memes in Social Media Marketing
What is a meme?
A Meme is a current trending cultural symbol or social idea that is compelling and then shared across many social media networking venues. It can be something as simple as a hashtag, link, video or mostly commonly a picture.
Companies and brands both benefit by using memes. Memes help create not only a buzz around a product or service but also receive huge exposure, delivering the company or brands message to their target markets with in a short period of time
Why are memes so popular?
Memes have the explosive capacity to go viral very quickly, encouraging the creativity if current new, topics and conversations.
Memes also have a longer shelf-life in social media circles, mainly because not only are they easy to create and share but they generally adapt, get updated and sometimes even cross reference other memes to create the meme hybrids.
Why Means have gone so viral.
1. Ownership is Negligible
Memes are not particularly owned by any one person or entity. Even if you are pledged to create a meme it will eventually be adapted on its own depending on the time, situations or groups its touches. In short, using another brands meme isn't off-limits.
2. Relevance is not mandatory:
It is not mandatory that all memes you create or use or related to your brand. it is used mainly to catch the attention of the community and share something that interest community members along the the topic of your brand. This allows for a company or brand to get a wider audience.
3. Linking to Social networks:
Although memes do not always need to relate directly to your company or brand it must connect people to your social media strategy
Example:
If Facebook is your main platform for marketing, adding memes to that campaign and then promoting hashtags along with it that can be used to organically take the users back the your main community leading your audience to the main flow of content and updates, keeping them as a long term member of your community or brand.
Why are memes good for marketing?
Memes are image based, something that easily attracts more of an audience. They also tend to be part of whats currently trending, you can find a meme for practically anything, from trending games, movies, music, and news etc.
In social media, it is quite easy to share content or images within a matter of seconds, especially from mobile devices. Memes are specifically made for this type of sharing.
For example: Posting a picture from a recent game with the caption of poking fun at a recent blunder (that is also in the realm of your brand message) would be a content likely to be worthy of Twitter re-tweeting, Pinterest repining Facebook Sharing, even throwing up on Instagram or sharing on Google Plus. It will ultimately spread the awareness to your brand or company.
